Last week I was invited to a special screening of the Final Fantasy Uncovered stream at Hoyts Broadway. After being served some complimentary popcorn and drinks, the stream started. Thanks to shoddy Australian internet, the stream was not what I would call smooth to begin with, but even though there was constant buffering and audio issues, I still can happily say that I am stupidly excited for Final Fantasy XV!
The stream can be watched below in it’s entirety, with lots of cool guests and announcements, it’s worth checking out. But for the sake of not boring you to death with a long list of what happened, I’ll just highlight the really good bits here.
First off, the game is releasing on September 30th this year. Not sure if this date will be exact given the Australian time differences, but I’m sure it won’t be more than a few hours difference regardless. The game can be pre-ordered right now from the usual retailers and comes in standard, deluxe or ultimate collectors editions.
Square Enix has also announced an origin story of sorts for the four main characters of FFXV in the way of a five part anime series spin-off called Brotherhood. The first episode of Brotherhood is available to watch now on YouTube (link below) with the other four parts releasing before the games release in September. I’ve watched the first episode and I must say, I’m into it.
On top of the anime, a full length CG animated movie titled Kingsglaive. The movie is set at the same time as the events of FFXV but follows a different storyline instead of Noctis. Game of Thrones Stars, Sean Bean and Lena Heady star as King Regis and Luna, with Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul playing the main character, Nyx. You can check out the trailer below.
Justice Monsters Five, a in-game mini game, will also be making its way to iOS, Android and Windows phones soon. It’s a sort of pinball style game, not much else is known about the game at this point, but it looks cool. Keeping in line with the “stuff you can do before XV is released” theme, the Platinum Demo for Final Fantasy XV is now available to download on Xbox One and PS4. The demo looked great from what I saw and follows a young Noctis in a dream world.
If anything, it looks more like a sort of teaser for some of what the game can do, similar to MGS: Ground Zeroes I suspect. I’ve downloaded the 4.5GB demo on Xbox One and played through twice. I like the graphics and fast paced action. The cute dream world leads up to a proper boss battle as adult Noctis where you can use his Warp Strike and Fire Bombs, which gives you a little taste of what’s to come.
And finally, the new gameplay trailer. I have to be honest here, I haven’t been excited for a Final Fantasy game before. I accidentally picked up FF7 many years ago, and while I loved it, I didn’t know anything about the game. The more recent additions to the series didn’t really do anything to make me feel compelled to go out and play them, nor did I even bother watching the trailers. But now, XV has me hooked.
After seeing the trailer below, with the vast world, rapid and fluid combat and Chocobo drifting, I am pretty excited to get my hands on this one. All in all I would say Square Enix has set the hype train to full speed ahead, with all these announcements and so much content to consume before the games release later this year, I think it’s fair to say I’m not the only one counting down the days!
