Many moons ago there was a book in Dymocks’ manga section. This particular book caught my eye simply because I’m a sucker for just about all anime/manga but particularly ones with swords on the cover/back. I picked up Gangsta: 1 and turned it over.
“In the city of Ergastulum, a shady village filled with made men and petty thieves, whores on the make and cops on the take, there are some deeds too dirty for even its jaded inhabitants to touch. Enter ‘The Handymen’, Nic and Worick, who take care of the jobs no one else will handle. Until the day when a cop they know requests their help in taking down a new gang muscling in on the territory of a top mafia family. It seems like business (and mayhem) as usual, but The Handymen are about to find that this job is a lot more than they bargained for.”
For the low price of $10 I was willing to risk it on this particular book and boy am I glad I did! Gangsta has turned out to be one of my favourite stories of all time. The characters are dark and at times unbelievable but also weirdly relatable considering they are pretty shady.
Worick moonlights as a gigolo (if you don’t know, don’t ask your parents. They will ban you from reading my articles, just Google it.) and Nic is a mute master assassin with a pretty awesome twist that explains why he’s so good at killing people, but also hits at the danger of why he isn’t always in control which adds a really tense element to him. Worick and Nic’s relationship is a complicated one at best and considering how close they are, their origin story of how they met is pretty dark and twisted but also really well done.
It’s really hard to talk about Gangsta without giving away the story and trust me when I say this is one you want to experience first hand. At first it may not make any sense but give it until at least the end of the first book, it’ll all come together and impress you, I promise.
If you’re not the reading type then I have good news! Gangsta has recently been green-lit for an anime to be created based on it, which is super exciting because it’s a very fast paced book so will work well as a show.
I may do a proper review in the near future as I have finally gotten my hands on 4 and 5, but 1, 2 and 3 are 100% worth reading!
