I often wonder if people understand what I am doing here. I like to think I’m contributing to the world in some miniscule way and that you, the followers, get something out of visiting my little blog.
The future of DS&B has been a topic of much debate over the last few days. Should I focus more on games? Cars? Photography? Should I even bother with the site anymore at all?
I have a yoyo violently flinging around in my head just thinking about where I’m going with it. DS&B started out as a simple blog to keep track of my work as a writer. In my down time I would write about whatever I felt like and flash forward to just a few months later and now I have a chance to make it into something real.
I try to be honest at all times and I feel like I’ve kept that going through my writing. The truth is, I’m not a professional. I barely know what I’m doing with my life. Somehow, DS&B has given the impression that I do and in doing so I’ve created the foundations for something that has real potential to be special. I’m the kind of person that learns while doing something and I guess that is what’s happened here. Somewhere along the way, I learned how to blog.
Now I have globally recognized companies sending me products to review, PR agencies putting me on legitimate media lists and people saying that I’m a good writer. I never expected any of that to happen. In fact, I had multiple teachers tell me I would never be a writer when I was in high school. Making a career out of writing and taking photos would be a dream come true for me, so of course I want to have a proper go at it.
My conundrum, my classic pickle is this:
What can I offer that doesn’t already exist? How can I make something that isn’t already being done by people with deeper wallets and deeper connections and more importantly, how can I do something that will grow and remain sustainable over time?
At first I thought, well screw it, I’ll just try to compete directly with the big dogs. This is what you have seen me do over the last few weeks. I followed a pre-made recipe that I thought would put me in league with other websites that cover similar content.
I have now realized I had it all wrong.
I can’t compete with those guys. I simply don’t have the same resources that they do. In fact, there’s a lot that I don’t have that they do, there’s things I may never have that they do. But there is one thing that I do have, this one thing is what I am most proud of. I wouldn’t trade this one thing for all the advertisers or connections in the world.
This one thing that I have, the game changer and why I genuinely believe people will like what I have planned for the future of DS&B, the thing that separates me from the rest is simple – I write with my heart.
It sounds corny but it’s true. I don’t get paid for any of this stuff. Every word you read is one that I have sat down on my own time and thought out. I love writing and taking photos so when I do those things, it’s all done with passion and I hope some of you can see that.
Enough of the cheese, you want to know what to expect from me and DS&B right?
Well, like I mentioned before I am working with companies to review some of their products now. Most of these products will be camera related for now. I’ve also been added to just about every major game developer’s media list which means I have access to all their latest news, as well as events and games to review.
I am also very passionate about cars and skateboarding. I have made some really great contacts in both industries and will be doing some projects and reviews based around the two. First up is a budget track car which will be coming in the next few months. As well as getting a skate-centric magazine off the ground. Podcasts and videos will also start to play a bigger role in how I share and create content on the site.
But more importantly, you will see a less formal, more personal approach to journalism. I’m going to make sure there is something here that you wouldn’t find on any other website or blog.
I also want to encourage people to blog. I am always happy to answer questions and want to make that more known. I’m always looking for stuff to do so if you have suggestions feel free to get in touch. My cyber-door is always open and DS&B is always looking for guest bloggers and contributors. I will be doing a proper post on that soon.
For those of you that have been following me through this adventure I just want to say thank you all. It means the world to me and I don’t think you will ever fully understand how much a simple like or comment makes me smile. Without you, I would be nothing.
In the mean time, you will start to see some changes around the site. The About Us page is getting a make over as well as adding a contact page. I’m going to tidy up some of the menu’s, categories and tags too. Basically just make everything a little bit neater.
Stay awesome guys!
